Speaking of, the learning curve is steep and you can’t just hack and slash your way through enemies. You have to learn combos that you unlock and execute them. The mechanics and combos are kept really simple, but you need to master the game to truly get somewhere and that can take time. There were a few times I had to die and continue to save potions and revives just in case something worse comes along.

Its presentation and cinematography also show inspiration from anime and manga like Berserk and Claymore, with heavily armored warriors and giant swords galore. Its story also has some surprisingly deep themes regarding toxic relationships, whether with people or organizations, and Soulstice is packed to the brim with cutscenes in between all the action. Mid-budget games often struggle to tell consistently engaging stories, but that’s one place Soulstice doesn’t fail. The budget mainly shows in the voice acting and lack of setting variety.

The timings are generous, but combat remains challenging, as Lute is unable to fend off everything at once. Battles grow in scale and complexity, introducing monsters that are invulnerable until you activate the appropriate energy field, knights with armour that has to be punched off first, and wraiths that possess creatures—and threaten to revive them. As such, it can be difficult to keep up with all of Lute's button prompts, and to remember that a frozen enemy will eventually thaw out. Button-mashing is just about doable, with the aid of consumable (and limited) health items that you can purchase or find secreted in the world, but at no point can you fully switch off during battle.

Soulstice has great old school vibes but it may fall short of what it was trying to achieve. It can be frustrating at times and after a while I found it more frustrating than fun. For those who love DMC/Bayonetta, I’d definitely say give it a go, but beware that you will be sinking hours into the game.
