The Romans started a tradition of dressing the bride to be and bridesmaids exactly the same - something which continued until Victorian times. But not a tradition we're prone to follow today!

The oldest ever bridesmaid was Edith Gulliford, in the age of 105. She was bridesmaid to Kyra and James in 2007 at Chatham, England. (Source: Guinness World Records).

Don't be considered a bridezilla and try and obtain involved in your hen party organization. Leave that for your chief bridesmaid and also the rest of the girls. It's meant to be considered a lovely surprise for you personally!

Your closest friend might not be the very best person to become your chief bridesmaid. She might a) live abroad b) have young kids or be expecting c) not be considered a great organizer d) possess a demanding job e) be shy and retiring. You need to consider who is going to become able to invest in the job and get it done well

Be sensitive about finances. Not everybody has big salaries or spare cash. So allow it to be known that you aren't necessarily looking to have a blow-out weekend inside a European city or further afield for the hen do. (Remember what went down in the film 'Bridesmaids'?)

If you have not seen the film 'Bridesmaids' then it is part of the wedding planning to catch it on Netflix or perhaps a DVD. Plenty of food for thought there

If you would like your girls to obtain their hair and/or make-up professionally done around the morning of the wedding, you will want to foot the balance for this (see note 6)

On exactly the same note, don't claim that your girls join for your diet/boot camp, daily fitness sessions. If they wish to, fine try not to put any pressure in it. They come out of the box!

Work together with your girls to select their bridesmiad gowns. Don't just let them know what they're wearing - allow them to get involved by providing them a range of gowns

You should expect to pay for the bridesmaid's dresses. Unless you've given them carte blanche to choose what they wish to wear without any involvement. Make it clear in advance that you're expecting these phones pay for their dresses (if that is what you decide to do)

Putting your bridesmaids all in exactly the same frock and exactly the same color is dated. Far better (and more flattering on their behalf individually) to possess different styles of frock in styles which will suit them. For example, your well-endowed friend might not thank you for putting her inside a strapless number

Think necklines and hemlines. Your girls will probably possess a good concept of which neckline suits them best - one-shoulder, strapless, sweetheart. And as for hemlines, few people will wish to wear a brief cocktail frock - if they are self-conscious regarding their legs they may prefer a tea-length gown.

The same applies to colors. The same color won't necessarily suit everyone so consider having different tones of exactly the same shade (to have an ombre effect). And some colors work nicely together - royal blue and orange, pastels, pale blue, and sand tones. Get a Dessy Pantone tool that will help you work out your color scheme.

If you're marrying within the summer, or one of the maids is happening a sunshine holiday just before the wedding, gently remind her of her type of bridesmaid dress to ensure that she won't have strap-marks which will be noticeable.

Your bridesmaids should each be allowed to bring their boyfriends/partners/husbands like a plus one. Goes without saying!

Don't insist that the bridesmaids join you in endless favor-making afternoons/evenings. You can invite them along, but it's few people's concept of a good time to invest hours painting shells/boxes/making bunting

It used to become the tradition that bridesmaids were always single, unmarried women. That's no more the case I'm glad to say

Girls are junior bridesmaids - not flower girls - after the chronilogical age of eight. Dessy includes a fabulous choice of junior bridesmiad gowns designed to fit pre-teens - and several of them match the adult dusty rose bridesmaid dresses by Dessy.

Remember that you would like these girls to become your friends when you are married. So don't be considered a bridezilla. They're a part of your special day and there to assist and give you support - so have fun too!
